General questions

Do contractors work for Fix Forward?

No, they don’t. All our contractors are independent and run their own businesses. Fix Forward provides entrepreneur training and connects them to additional business to supplement their own client base. In order to make the Fix Forward service sustainable, our contractors pay us a small commission for each project they successfully win.

How do we screen people?

We use a rigorous screening process to assess both the technical skills as well as the character and soft skills of each contractor, including thorough reference checks.

This screening process includes:

  1. An application form.
  2. A telephone interview to  gauge experience and communication skills.
  3. Client reference calls. Before we accept a contractor as part of Fix Forward, we speak to at least three past clients.
  4. A one-one-one interview.
  5. A site inspection to assess the quality of the work they have done.

We test soft skills by assessing the contractor’s communication skills throughout the selection process.

  1. Do they communicate confidently in English?
  2. Is their English comprehension strong?
  3. Are they easy to reach on the phone?
  4. Do they call or WhatsApp instead of sending ‘Please call me’ messages?
  5. Do they live up to their commitments when promising to send through information?
  6. Do they arrive on time for the interview?
  7. Do they present themselves well in the interview?

We also insist that all contractors attend 4 weeks of business training before they join the platform. This gives us more time to get to know them and build trust.

What cities does Fix Forward cover?

We currently operate in the greater Cape Town area as well as Gauteng, with plans to expand into other areas in the near future.

Hiring a contractor

Can I get an estimate over the phone?

Because each situation is unique and often difficult to describe accurately over the phone, our contractors will generally have to visit your premises before you receive a quote. It’s important for the contractor to do a site visit so that they can quote accurately. Thereafter the quotes are emailed. If it’s a small electrical or plumbing job charged at an hourly rate, the contractor will be able to tell you their rate over the phone.

Do the contractors have their own transport?

Many contractors have their own vehicles. All of those who don’t do have access to transport and so you needn’t collect or drop off them or their team. It’s all part of making sure you get a hassle-free service.

Do the contractors have all the tools they need?

All our contractors own the basic tools of their trade. If any specialist tools are required which they do not own, they will be able to hire them.

Do I need to supervise the contractor?

No. All our contractors are not only skilled in their specific trade, but are able to manage projects themselves with confidence. They all have experience in supervising their own teams and so all you need to do is explain what should be done and let them get on with it.

Will the contractor always be on-site themselves?

Some of our contractors do run multiple contracts and therefore might not be on-site all of the time. We do expect them to be sufficiently on-site to make sure their team is working well and to answer any questions or concerns you have. We suggest that before the contract commences you check with your contractor when they will be on-site during the project.

Can the contractor also get materials for me or is it labour only?

Our contractors can arrange to purchase materials for you. There is a time and transport cost associated with this which would be built into their overall quotation.

If I want to use the same contractor, can I contact them directly?

We recommend that even for subsequent jobs you hire your contractor through Fix Forward. This way you get the benefit of the accountability we provide, as well as support and advice if things do go wrong. There is no fee for requesting a contractor through Fix Forward.

Will Fix Forward assist if there are problems?

Our contractors are ultimately responsible to deliver on the project. However, if there is an issue we will put pressure on our contractors to make good. We also provide guidance to all parties involved, throughout every project. We send a series of emails to clients with tips and advice, and we’re available on the phone if there is an issue they are struggling to resolve, on either side.

Can I trust the contractor in my home/office?

Many of our clients are single women and we never have any hesitation in recommending them to allow our contractors into their homes. Not only have we put a great deal into finding trustworthy contractors but were things to go wrong on a Fix Forward contract the contractors would risk losing out on hundreds of thousands of Rands of future business. Our contractors, therefore, make sure they only work with people in their team whom they can fully trust.
